The Emmaus Road
Words by Paul Warnock Music by R. Warnock © 2003
With their backs to Jerusalem, the place of God’s defeat
Headed for Emmaus, two friends in deep distress
How could God’s chosen one be tortured to his death?
Jesus now a corpse, better move on from this mess
CHORUS
The Emmaus road, the road of disappointment
The Emmaus road, their dreams and plans were shattered
Minds confused, hearts breaking with the load
But who was this man, giving them God’s perspective,
Causing their hearts to burn within them?
It was Jesus, right beside them, on the Emmaus road.
Like them we often struggle, when our dreams come crashing
down
Lord, you seem silent, unconcerned and even gone.
Then on our road of disappointment, you clear the fog away,
We finally see you there, you’ve been right there all along
CHORUS
Didn’t our hearts burn as he opened the scriptures to us?
As he spoke to us, wasn’t there fire in our bones?
And though for a time our minds couldn’t keep up
with the way our hearts were moving,
In his perfect time, and in his perfect way,
God gave us what he knew was best.
The Emmaus road, the road of disappointment
The Emmaus road, our dreams and plans are shattered
Minds confused, hearts breaking with the load
But who is this man, giving us God’s perspective,
Causing our hearts to burn within us?
It is Jesus, right beside us, on the Emmaus road.
